Picking an online storage provider - There are a number of companies offering to store your data online. While we certainly hope you find that vitalEsafe offers what you need, you should consider the following as you evaluate an online storage provider:

  • How secure do you want your data to be? While millions of  people are storing digital photographs with the aim of sharing them, you may not want your family photos floating around on the Internet and items such as tax returns, wills, etc. certainly have to be secure. So, if you want security look for such details as encryption while the data is transferred and while stored, unique encryption keys for each safe, secure data centers, etc.
  • Are there specific hardware requirements or software which must be downloaded to use the service?  Generally this is not the case but it doesn't  hurt to ask.
  • Is there a long term commitment and if there is a free account or free trial, are there limitations as to file size, etc?  Are monthly and annual plans available?
  • If you need online backup how much data do you need to store and what is the speed of your Internet connection?  Many services offer HUGE amounts of storage for a low price, but consider that it could take months to backup 50GB of data. If you have a large data collection inquire if there is a rapid backup capability for the first upload (generally putting your data on a removable hard drive and sending to the provider for initial upload).
  • Support - If you have questions, can you find answers? Support options should include FAQs, online documentation, tutorials, and e-mail and may also include forums, instant chat and phone support.
  • Additional features - Bulk uploading of files, secure sharing, and  personal health records are but a few of the features which you might find useful.
  • In any case you should use your online storage as one line of defense and always keep another backup copy using another method (removable hard drive, etc.).
