vitalEsafe is pleased to announce the availability of our new shadowSafe feature. shadowSafe allows you to make a complete "image copy" backup of a Microsoft laptop, desktop, or server and store that copy, plus incremental changes (at the block level) in your vitalEsafe account. The image copy backup includes databases, registry entries, users, printers, rights, application programs, etc. – everything needed to completely restore a system back to full working order. shadowSafe is easy to set up and automatically handles your onsite and offsite backup needs.

How shadowSafe works:  vitalEsafe provides ShadowProtect software developed by Storagecraft  as a part of the shadowSafe solution. A simple installation program is provided by vitalEsafe and in just minutes shadowSafe can go to work for you.

A local image copy of the system is made to an external USB drive which remains on site to receive scheduled backups.  After the initial full backup is completed a copy is made to a second USB external drive that is shipped to vitalEsafe. vitalEsafe personnel will then upload this full backup to the customer's safe.  This "rapid upload" via a direct connection allows for even hundreds of gigabytes to be quickly stored in vitalEsafe. 

After the full backup is taken and loaded into vitalEsafe, the ShadowProtect software, on a scheduled basis, performs an incremental block level backup. Only data (at a block level) that has been changed since the last incremental backup is copied onto the local external hard drive.  After this incremental backup is completed locally, the shadowSafe software takes over and uploads the changes into the customer's vitalEsafe account.

How you recover your data

In the event of system failure  or if  just a simple file recovery is required, the local external USB drive may be utilized. If there is a catastrophic event resulting in the loss of the machine and local external USB drive, vitalEsafe will provide a replacement external USB drive with the customer's initial full backup plus all subsequent incrmental backups.  To recover, the user simply boots from a Recovery Environment CD-ROM and restores the entire system; operating system, applications, configuration settings and data – within minutes. The backups can even be restored to different hardware which provides easy disaster recovery and less painful hardware upgrades.

Why is shadowSafe better than traditional backup solutions?

Restoring data to a machine that has failed can require many time consuming steps including: media collection, installation of the  operating system, installation of applications, and then restoration of the data which has been backed up.  With shadowSafe, the user just boots from a recovery CD-ROM and with the external USB drive can restore their entire system easily and quickly.
